Thanks to low prices, a large selection of products and widespread availability, x86 PC architectures are increasingly being used in time-critical embedded applications. Many applications – including machine controls, automats and measurement systems – need a reliable, economical and compact operating system which fulfills realtime requirements while also offering a graphical user interface. Microsoft provides an attractive solution for this: Windows Embedded CE.

The above-mentioned applications frequently also need a fieldbus interface for communicating with peripherals or with a higher-level controller. To meet this demand, Softing is offering Windows Embedded CE 6.0 drivers for its CAN and PROFIBUS interface cards.

With all PC/104, PC/104plus and PCI cards, you will now receive free drivers and sample applications for rapid integration into your embedded PC. The table above provides an overview of the available solutions.

The Special Case of Panel PCs

Many modern panel PCs which are used as intelligent control panels no longer offer traditional extension slots but instead feature only Ethernet or USB interfaces. To enable such machine-oriented mini-PCs with Windows CE to directly access the bus, Softing has created a solution – starting with CAN – which allows bus connections via USB.

With the right driver, CANusb can now run on both x86 and ARM-based Windows Embedded CE computers.
