Enterprise Integration and Energy

Protocol Gateway Products

IEC61850-Integration

Enterprise Integration, Billing and Optimization Solutions helps Integrated Utilities or Power Generation Companies to have Local and Enterprise View of their Power Generation, Power T&D and Energy Trading data in real-time online and make real-time decisions and analysis and enable their various systems to interact and exchange information and carry out business functions like billing and energy audit.

Energy Optimization Portal

Energy is an online resource in that it is produced and consumed simultaneously. Any decision support system used by a participating organization in the power market (be it a generating company, transmission company, distribution company, system operator) need to be a fully integrated and online system to provide maximum value to the user. EOP (Energy Optimization Portal) caters to this critical requirement of utilities to have a fully integrated and online decision support system that spans multiple functions, departments and locations.

The core objective of EOP is to optimize the revenue of a utility by acting as an online, real-time decision support system. All users in the energy chain starting from the generating stations, transmission utilities, distribution companies, market participants (such as IPPs and CPPs) are included in the broad perspective of EOP

Modules

The EOP is slit across modules and sub-modules. These are by no means, watertight compartments. Information is freely shared across different modules. For example, the ABT module may take as inputs the heat rate information provided by the performance calculation module. The classification only provides a cohesive and intuitive way of accessing information contained in the EOP application. A brief description of these features across different modules is given below:

Plant Management Module

Performance Calculation module: deals with online performance calculation and efficiency monitoring. Unit heat rate calculations, auxiliary equipments performance calculations etc. are handled in this sub-module. Results are made available as graphical and tabular reports. All calculations conform to relevant standards such as Performance Test Codes from ASME. In addition, valuable optimization guidance in terms of heat rate deviation and operator controllable losses is also provided. Data validation is also handled by the performance calculation module.

IAMS: is the Intelligent Alarm Management System. This sub-module acts as an expert system that identifies the root cause for critical alarms. In addition, predictive analysis for slow varying process points is also provided by IAMS. Statistical analysis of alarms and alarm grouping features are also available through this module.

MOR: Merit Order Rating sub-module deals with optimal load allocation of the station demand across running units. This module is integrated with the ABT module and can take the ninety six 15-minute dispatch schedule for the station as its input. Optimization results are provided in graphical and tabular format to the operator.

MMS: Maintenance Management sub-module is a inventory management and maintenance tracking solution tailored for power generating stations. Parts and spares management as well as maintenance scheduling, optimization and tracking are the key features of this module. Predictive maintenance through condition monitoring for critical components as well as evaluating the effectiveness for a maintenance activity is included in this module.

Soot blowing optimization: assists the plant operators in optimal scheduling of the soot blowing operation. This is done using online heat transfer rate calculations. This approach assists the operators in striking the balance between heat rate increase due to lack of soot blowing and steam loss due to excessive soot blowing.

Energy Market Module:

ABT Module: This sub-module deals with Availability Based Tariff. Data from different ABT compliant energy meters are downloaded and displayed through this module. Trending and reports of this ABT data as well as calculation of UI rates and charges under ABT specifications is handled by this module.

Scheduling: While ABT is specific to the Indian power market, all other sub-modules in the Energy Market module is applicable to any power market. Scheduling deals with optimal scheduling and dispatch of power subject to generation and transmission constraints. Thermal and hydro power scheduling are dealt with separately in this sub-module.

Trading: deals with optimization related to energy trading in a deregulated power market. Open Access to Transmission facility under the ABT regime is handled in this sub-module. Managing PPA (Power Purchase Agreements) as well as maximizing revenue in short-term market opportunities is also handled through this module.

Tariff: is a flexible tariff calculation engine to be used in the Energy Market module. Energy tariff rates under different schemes can be specified here. Multiple versions of the tariff structure can be maintained in the system. Based on data downloaded from the ABT meters as well as information available from scheduling, dispatch and trading, tariff payable for specified duration will be calculated by this module. Tariff calculation results will be made available as reports in the format desired by the user.

Network Management module:

Network Analysis Module: deals with voltage stability analysis, transmission & distribution losses calculation as well as optimal power flow computation. EOP supports online integration with a transmission/distribution SCADA using OPC, DDE or similar interfaces. This allows for events from the field to be simulated in the NAM sub-module and analysis to be performed in an online fashion.

DER / DSM: This module deals with integrating distributed energy resources (DER) and demand side management (DSM) solutions in a network to derive maximum benefits in a market mechanism. Technical and commercial implications of turning on a specific DER or DSM resource are analyzed so that online decision making by the concerned operator (or an automation system!) is possible.

Fault Analysis: This is a standard SoE (Sequence of Events) and fault analysis module. Data from multiple IEDs can be collected and correlated in a single sources using the integration mechanisms provided by EOP. Root cause analysis as well as fault distance analysis for a network fault can be evaluated through this sub-module.

SCED: deals with security constrained economic dispatch. Similar to the MOR solution in Plant Management Module, SCED deals with multiple generation sources in a transmission network (while the MOR deals with multiple generating units in a single station). Transmission constraints and losses are taken into account to evaluate the optimal power dispatch strategy.

Modeling and Simulation:

Boiler simulation: Thermodynamic model for a fossil fired generating unit is developed here. This is not a standard solution, as the applicable model will vary from plant to plant and unit to unit. This model enables evaluation of different operation strategy. This model also provides the input for the state-variable control algorithm.

Forecasting module: deals with forecasting load and frequency in short to medium term by developing neural network models for the same. Such models can provide invaluable assistance in scheduling and maintenance planning.

What-if analyses: This sub-module allows operator to simulate the inputs to different modules in EOP and view the results. This will operator to check out the effectiveness of various operation strategy. For example, it can help operator to decide whether heat rate can be improved by changing certain process parameter values or to inspect the benefits of a specific unit loading scheme.

Analytics:

Report Engine: Reports from different modules in EOP as well as reports integrating information spanning multiple modules are served by this module. All reports are delivered through a browser interface, requiring no client software installation. Reports can be exported to any desired format such as .pdf (Acrobat), .xls (MS Excel), .rtf (MS Word) etc. A report builder is also provided so that user can create their own reports

Configuration:

Configuration module: All configuration data for EOP is stored in XML format. This allows for ease of maintenance and portability. Configuration options can be changed through a browser interface by any authorized user. A separate configuration loader is provided to ensure that administrator approval is obtained before loading any configuration changes to the application.
